The great blue heron is nearly four feet tall, the largest heron in North America.  It is common and found across the U.S. , southern Canada and in Mexico. These photos were taken on April 3, 2008 at a great blue heron rookery near Easthampton, Massachusetts.  There are 19 nests in a line of dead oak trees with most nests being actively used this spring as a site of courtship, mating and parental care.
