Fog drapes the Holyoke Range

Fog drapes the Holyoke Range

October 8, 2012, 7:45 am

Fog and low clouds blanket the crumpled hills of the Holyoke Range, forming the southern boundary of Hadley, Massachusetts. These are actually ancient basaltic mountains, dating to 200 million years, late Triassic and early Jurassic. Oriented along an east-west line, the Holyoke Range is one of the few mountain ranges in North America to do so. In mid- to late-October, the maples, oaks, hickories and hemlocks combine to give a beautiful burnished red-gold color.
