Tricolored heron
Egretta tricolor
Ding Darling NWR, February 19, 2009
The tricolored heron has a long bill and a very long neck, with dark breast and light belly. It will hold still for a long time, then dash about in search of food.
This bird was illuminated by the golden light of early morning, revealing more of its colors and plumage. The photo shows a slight reddish tint to the breast and back feathers.
