Thoreau said that the bittern is "the genius of the bog," and after watching this master of stealth at Weskeag Marsh, I agree. Frozen in the tall grasses and reeds, at first you might think it's just a stick. Then the stick moves. Every move and step is taken with the most meticulous care.
