Sandhill cranes in early morning light

Sandhill cranes in early morning light

Sandhill cranes are one of the most ancient bird species, with fossils found up to nine million years old.  They are the most abundant of cranes on Planet Earth.  These birds can live to more than 20  years old in the wild, twice that long in captivity.  The Rocky Mountain "tribe" found at the Bosque del Apache is he largest subspecies (Greater Sandhill Crane - Grus canadensis tabida).
