Picoides pubescens

This is the smallest North American woodpecker, with a short bill used to forage on weed stalks or small twigs. The male has a red patch on the crown, missing for the female. This individual was at Arcadia Nature Sanctuary, Easthampton, Mass., Oct. 8, 2012.
