the dream sandpiper
I photographed this semipalmated sandpiper feeding in a shallow pool at Weskeag Marsh, South Thomaston, Maine. The bird is about 6 inches long, is gray-brown above, with light streaks on a white breast and rump. So these bright colors are fanciful, nowhere near the bird's fairly drab plumage. But such feeding energy, fattening up in September for the long flight to its winter home in South America! This image was processed using several Photoshop and Color Efex filters.
