loon juvenile at two months, with parent

Loon chicks grow very quickly. At two months the juvenile is nearly as large as the adult. When hatched the chick is a chocolate brown but the mantle and primary feathers quickly change to gray, with white breast feathers. The young loon retains this gray-white color during the first year of its life, acquiring the familiar black-white checkerboard pattern only as it becomes an adult.
