Northern Shoveler, male, breeding plumage
Anas clypeata
Stebbins Nature Sanctuary, Longmeadow, Massachusetts
This brightly festooned puddle duck with unmistakably broad bill is an aquatic Shop-Vac, moving slowly through the water, foraging opportunistically and enthusiastically. When feeding, it keeps its bill under water for most of the time, occasionally coming up for air. But sometimes, as in this photo, they come up to rest.
