Northern Cardinal, female
Cardinalis cardinalis
Stebbins Nature Sanctuary, Longmeadow, Massachusetts
The female is a color-muted version of the male cardinal, but still with the large reddish crest and bright red bill, and red tail feathers. In the southwest, the female Northern Cardinal could be initially mistaken for the desert cardinal, the Pyrrhuloxia, which has more gray in its plumage.
