Peregrine falcon

The peregrine is a large (40" wingspan), powerful and extremely swift falcon that hunts mainly medium-size birds such as sandpipers, yellowlegs and plovers. This one was perched above a salt panne at Weskeag Marsh, and seconds after this photo made a rapid dive to capture a least sandpiper.

It is slightly smaller than a Gyrfalcon.
