At Matinicus Rock, Maine, arctic terns greatly outnumber common terns. These photos were taken on July 12, 2008 from the Puffin V, a Maine Audubon Society boat out of the Hog Island camp. These photos show the tern hovering and scanning for fish before plunging into the water for retrieval.
The champion of circumpolar nesters, the arctic tern breeds in Alaska, northern Canada, and the northeast coat - then makes the 11,000 mile journey to winter in Antarctic waters!
