Costa's Hummingbird, adult male in breeding plumage

Calypte costae

A small chunky hummingbird with a beautiful iridescent gorget with feathers extending beyond the shoulders (male), and a dark medium bill that is very slightly decurved. This male was fiercely defending his territory at the Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum near Tucson.
