Vermillion Flycatcher, adult male

Vermillion Flycatcher, adult male

Pyrocephalus rubinus

Patagonia Lake State Park, Arizona. Slightly smaller than an Eastern phoebe, this bird is strikingly decked out in black and scarlet. It poses on a prominent perch (as here) then sallies out to catch a mosquito or other insect. It is found in open bushes and lower trees near water.
