Great Kiskadee
Pitangus sulphuratus
Aransas NWR, Rockport, Texas
This large neotropical flycatcher has a northern range that just barely extends into Texas up to the Kingsville area. With its bright yellow underparts, black-and-white striped crown, and black mask, this bird is distinctive among all other large tyrannid flycatchers. It is common in parks and rural areas of Central and South America but not in south Texas. Its diet includes dragonflies, grasshoppers, bees, wasps and beetles. In south Texas, it also consumes fruits and berries of trees and shrubs.
