Baird's sandpiper

Baird's sandpiper

This is one of a pair of southbound migrating juvenile Baird's sandpipers that dropped in on August 20, 2008 to feed at Weskeag Marsh in South Thomaston, Maine.   Baird's sandpipers are uncommon in midcoast Maine.  At first glance, Baird's looks somewhat like other peeps such as Least or Semipalmated sandpipers or White-rumped.  But Baird's are larger than leasts or semis, about 7.5" long; they also have longer wings that extend beyond the tail feathers, jet black bills, and black legs.  Baird's also have an overall buffy appearance.
