Common Murres in breeding plumage

Common Murres in breeding plumage

These murres stay closer to the water than do the puffins and razorbills. All these birds are Common Murres, although Thick-billed Murres may also be found in the area. This is a slender Alcid, with an 18" length and 26" wingspan. At a distance, it can be difficult to discriminate between murres and razorbills. Both are black with white underparts in breeding season.
