the aura of a common loon

the aura of a common loon

Loons are among the oldest of bird species.  With their black and white plumage, checkerboard-patterned feather, glowing red eye, and long dagger-like bill, they are a primordial-looking creature.  Their mournful wails, maniacal laughs and assortment of yodels adds more mystery.  This image began with a photo I took on June 24, 2008 at Damariscotta Lake, Maine.  I wanted to create an image that would give a neon glow from the bird's head.  This was done in Photoshop using Color Efex filters.
