Red-tailed Hawk
Buteo jamaicensis
Honey Pot Rd., Hadley, Massachusetts
These are the default buteo raptors of the Eastern United States, found in tall trees at the edges of fields and rivers, and along interstate highway corridors. In flight, the underwing and breast color is creamy white, whereas the overawing and mantle colors are dark brown-reddish. It is a perch-hunting bird, that sits and waits patiently for prey such a mice or voles. But it is shy and will fly if approached.
