Here on Damariscotta Lake we get to watch the loons from mid-June nesting and hatch, chick growth, and family behavior until the loons fly out to coastal salt water in late fall. This year a chick hatched on June 18 and was carefully protected by both parents from predators such as snapping turtles, herring gulls, or even rogue loons. Just before the lake ices over for the winter, the loons fly out to nearby coastal salt water where they can continue to fish. They return to the lake in mid-April just after ice-out.
