Pectoral sandpiper

Pectoral sandpiper

Calidris melanotos

Juvenile, Weskeag Marsh, Sept. 17, 2009. These arrive at Weskeag from their breeding nurseries along northern Alsaka to the Northwest Territories. They will soon leave headed for wintering grounds in South America from Peru to southern Brazil to Patagonia. Pectorals look like a least sandpiper on steroids, with a beefy chest and a densely streaked bib.
